Our Story

We are a full-service landscape company offering comprehensive design, installation and ongoing landscape maintenance.

ABOUT US

Northwest Native Landscapes is a family-owned, full-service landscape company operating in the Portland metro area since 2003. What began as a mission to make landscapes more sustainable has grown into a collaborative team environment that includes innovative designers, seasoned builders and experienced maintenance caretakers.

Our project approach is unique because we understand landscapes from multiple perspectives: as a designer, builder and maintainer of these spaces. Some clients utilize just one aspect of our services, while others rely on us for all their landscape needs.

Our ultimate goal is for you to use and enjoy your outdoor spaces as much as your indoor ones.  Please email or call us to chat more about your project. We look forward to working with you!

Danโ€™l Langer

Owner | Operations | Landscape Designer

Danโ€™l Langer has been in love with gardens and plants for as long as he can remember. He grew up in the coastal mountains of the pacific NW and was always the first of his four brothers to be outside each day gardening and running around in nature. He has taken this love of the outdoors into everything he does. From teaching his children the love of nature to building this business from the ground up. These are all guided by nature and nurturing the things around us.

Landscape Experience: 20+ years

Favorite project: I love to combine, wood, water, stone and plants. I think my favorite project might be a project we did a few years back that created a floating, curved boardwalk over a large Rain garden that lead to a beautiful Japanese cedar soaking tub. But, I love all our projects!

If you were a plant, what would you be: I have so many plants I love. Maybe a Red Flowering Currant?

Hobbies: I love doing things with family and friends. I love hiking, nature tours, disc golf, Gardening, Pruning, Backpacking, Camping, Snowboarding, Cooking and so much more.

Emmett McCarthy

Landscape Designer

Emmett was born and raised in Milwaukie, Oregon, where he spent his childhood running around the yard, eating berries from the garden and developing a deep appreciation for the landscapes of the Pacific Northwest. He later studied at the University of Oregon, earning a Bachelorโ€™s degree in Landscape Architecture, where he developed a holistic, ecological approach to design. Today, you can often find Emmett at the grill or on a mountain, bringing that same appreciation for outdoor living into his work with Northwest Native Landscapes, creating thoughtful, sustainable spaces people can truly enjoy.

Experience: 3 years
Bachelors in Landscape Architecture

Favorite project: I love the constraints of designing a small space to make it feel like a private little oasis. In one project we turned a turf covered courtyard into a sanctuary featuring textural plantings, the sound of trickling water, and a brick patio where you can sip your coffee and feel like you're in your own Italian villa.

If you were a plant, what would you be: Impossible choice! Likely either manzanita or daphne. I love fragrant and sculptural plants!

Hobbies: Backpacking, skiing, climbing, cooking and birding!

Brett Splettstaszer

Landscape Maintenance Manager

Brett Splettstaszer uses his knowledge from the Landscaping industry over the years to incorporate environmentally conscious design and practical Native gardening. His passion for plants and our local ecosystem really comes through in his work.

Landscape Experience: 20 plus years

Favorite project: A large water feature and design job from several years ago, but every project has its own rewards.

If you were a plant, what would you be: Cornus canadensis (Creeping Dogwood/Bunchberry)

Hobbies: Gardening, Travelling, Sports, Skiing, and anything outdoors.

SCOTT Schrader

Construction Manager

Scott has his grandfather to thank for instilling in him a love of nature and gardening. He was lucky enough to grow up in a multigenerational household where his grandfather would spend sunup to sundown outside (wearing his bucket hat, patchwork scrubs, and cut-up socks for gloves!). Whether hiking through the forest or tending his amazing rose and fruit gardens, Scott and his brothers were often nearby, learning along the way. They spent many days hauling horse manure for the garden or logs for trail building in the nearby woods. Through these experiences, he learned how hard work can create beauty in this world. A joy he loves to share with others.

Experience: 15 years

Favorite project: I love full backyard remodels. Anything that involves reducing lawns and creating an oasis for people, plants, and animals. Projects that incorporate wood and stonework, as well as the use of plants native to the Northwest.

If you were a plant, what would you be: Tough choice. I love a manzanita for its unique bark and contorted branches. I also appreciate the Chief Joseph Pine. It is adorably rugged and zen at the same time.

Hobbies: Aside from hanging out with my wife and our dog, I could spend the rest of my time fly fishing in the great state of Oregon and occasionally catching a fish. I also enjoy reading and watching a Liverpool FC match when I can.
